Walkthrough, Tips, and Tricks:
The Legend of Zelda 
- First Quest
- Unless you enter your name as "ZELDA," your adventure
begins in the First Quest. After defeating Ganon, you will then
have the opportunity to embark on the Second Quest.
- Second Quest
- The Second Quest is basically the same game, but many of the
dungeons and items have been switched around. To immediately
begin the Second Quest, enter your name as "ZELDA."
First Quest
- Get the Wooden Sword
- The Wooden Sword can be found inside the door on the screen
where the game begins. Simply walk on top of the sword to pick
it up.
- Next Step: Complete Level One
- Find Level One - From Start (where Link begins the game),
go right one screen, up four screens and left one.
- Get the Wooden Boomerang - From the beginning of Level One,
go up three screens and right one. Destroy every last enemy
in the room to make it appear.
- Get the Bow - From the beginning of Level One, go up five
screens, and left one. Destroy all of the enemies in this room
to obtain the Bow.
- Find the Boss - To find the Boss Aquamentus, start at the
beginning of Level One and go up three screens, right two and
up one.
- Defeat Aquamentus - Aquamentus can be easily defeated with
the Bow and Arrow, but the Wooden Sword or Bombs are also quite
effective. When attacking, aim for his horn.
- Purchase the Blue Candle
- The Blue Candle can be purchased from several merchants in
the overworld for 60 Rupees. One of these merchants can be found
up one screen and left one screen from Start.
- Get the First Three Extra Heart Containers
- Heart Container One - From Start, go four screens to the right.
Use your Bombs just left of the pathway leading up to find a
secret door which leads to a Heart Container.
- Heart Container Two - From the entrance to Level One, go one
screen down and one screen left. Use the Candle to burn the
fifth bush from the right to find a hidden staircase which leads
to a Heart Container.
- Heart Container Three - The third Heart Container is found
in the desert. Exit the desert at the top right and use your
Bombs on the lower-right corner of the big rock to find it.
- Get the White Sword
- From Start, go right one screen, up five, left one, up one,
right three, up one, and enter the door. Simply step on the
White Sword to pick it up.
- Get the Letter to Old Woman
- From Start, go right one screen, up five, right five, up one
(without taking the ladder), right one and up one.
- Purchase the Medicine
- From Start, go right one screen. Use the Candle to burn the
bottom-left tree. Inside, you'll be able to purchase the Medicine.
- Next Step: Complete Level Two
- Find Level Two - From Start, go right four screens, up two,
right two, up one, left one and up one.
- Get the Magic Boomerang - From the beginning of Level Two,
go right one screen, up three and right one. Destroy every last
enemy in the room to make the Magic Boomerang appear.
- Find the Boss - To find the Boss Dodongo, start at the beginning
of Level Two and go right one screen, then up seven screens.
- Defeat Dodongo - Feed Dodongo two Bombs to destroy him. To
do this, let Dodongo walk toward you while you face him. Just
before he bumps into you, lay a Bomb. If you place it correctly,
the Bomb will go right into his mouth, and he will swell up
when the Bomb explodes.
- Next Step: Complete Level Three
- Find Level Three - From Start, go up one screen, left four,
down one and right one.
- Get the Raft - From the beginning of Level Three, go left
one screen, up two, left two, down one and take the Secret Passage.
- Find the Boss - To Find the Boss Manhandla, start at the beginning
of Level Three and go left one screen, up three and right one.
Bomb the right-hand wall, then go right one more screen.
- Defeat Manhandla - Manhandla is vulnerable to Bombs. If you
can hit it directly in the center, Manhandla can be destroyed
with one shot. If Bombs are not available, destroy its leaves
one petal at a time.
- Get the Fourth Extra Heart Container
- Walk to the East coast, then use the Ladder to get to the
dock which has a Heart Container resting on it.
- Purchase Arrow
- The Arrow can be bought from several different merchants in
the overworld. You only need to purchase the Arrow once. After
that you'll use a Rupee each time you fire an Arrow.
- Next Step: Complete Level Four
- Find Level Four - From Start, go up one screen, left two and
up one. Walk onto the dock and push up. If you have the Raft,
you will cross the lake and arrive at the entrance to Level
Four.
- Get the Ladder - From the beginning of Level Four, go up two
screens, left one, up two, right two and take the Secret Passage.
- Find the Boss - To find the Boss Gleeock, start at the beginning
of Level Four and go up two screens, left one and up four. Bomb
the right-hand wall then go right one. Bomb the right-hand wall
and go right two rooms.
- Defeat Gleeock - Stand just behind its heads (on top of its
body) and swing your Sword as fast as you can. When one of the
heads is cut off it will fly around the room. Do your best to
avoid the severed heads, and continue attacking the attached
ones.
- Get the Final Extra Heart Container
- Beginning on the East Coast, use the Raft on a dock to travel
north across the ocean. You'll soon find a door which leads
to the final Heart Container.
- Get the Power Bracelet
- From Start, go right one screen, up five, left one, up one,
left three and down one. Touch the top-right Armos Statue to
reveal the Power Bracelet.
- Get the Magic Sword
- From Start, go right one screen, up five, left one, up one,
left three, down one, left one, down one, left two and up one.
Push a gravestone on this screen to reveal a Hidden Staircase.
Take the stairs to get the Magic Sword.
- Next Step: Complete Level Five
- Find Level Five - From Start, go right one screen, up five,
left one, up one and right four. This will take you to the Lost
Hills. Keep going up until the screen stops repeating (about
four or five times), and you will be at the entrance to Level
Five.
- Get the Whistle - From the beginning of Level Five, go up
one screen, left two then take the Secret Passage. Go left one
screen and take another Secret Passage to find the Whistle.
- Find the Boss - To find the Boss Digdogger, start at the beginning
of Level Five and go up two screens, right one, up three and
left three.
- Defeat Digdogger - If you blow the Whistle, it will shrivel
up and you'll be able to attack it with your Sword. Occasionally,
Digdogger will split into two or three smaller Digdoggers when
you blow the Whistle. When this happens, just destroy one of
them, leave the room, and immediately re-enter. The other two
small Digdoggers will be gone.
- Purchase the Blue Ring
- From Start, go up one screen, left three, up three, then touch
the Armos Statues to bring them to life. You will find a Hidden
Staircase beneath one of them which leads to the Blue Ring.
- Next Step: Complete Level Six
- Find Level Six - From Start, go right two screens, and then
push the left stone using the strength of the Power Bracelet.
Enter the Hidden Staircase. When the man says, "Take any
road you want," enter the middle stairway. Next, go down
one screen, left one and up one to reach the entrance to Level
Six.
- Get the Magic Wand - From the beginning of Level Six, go left
one screen, up five, right one, up two and through the Secret
Passage.
- Find the Boss - To find the Boss Gohma, start at the beginning
of Level Six and go left one screen, up five, right one, down
one, right one and through a Secret Passage. Then go down one,
left one and up one.
- Defeat Gohma - Wait for Gohma to open his eye, then shoot
it with the Bow and Arrow. Red Gohmas take only one hit, while
the blue variety requires three hits.
- Buy Bait
- From Start, go up one screen, left three, then up three and
push the Armos Statues until you locate a set of stairs. Take
the stairs and purchase it from the merchant for 60 rupees.
- Next Step: Complete Level Seven
- Find Level Seven - From Start, go up one screen, left four,
up one, left one, up one, and blow the Whistle. To bypass the
"Grumble, Grumble" monster, you must have the Monster
Bait in your possession when you're standing in front of him.
- Find the Red Candle - From the beginning of Level Seven, go
up four screens, left one, up two, right two and take the Secret
Passage.
- Find the Boss - To find the Boss Aquamentus, start at the
beginning of Level Seven and go up four screens, left one, up
two, right four, up one, right one, through the Secret Passage,
and right one more screen.
- Defeat Aquamentus - Aquamentus can be easily defeated with
the Bow and Arrow, but the Sword or Bombs are very effective
also. When attacking, you should aim for its horn.
- Next Step: Complete Level Eight
- Find Level Eight - From Start, go right one screen, up two
and right three. Of the two paths on the right side of the screen,
take the upper one then go right two screens and down one. You
will see a tree blocking a pathway. Use the Candle on this tree
to find Level Eight
- Get the Magic Book - From the beginning of Level Eight, go
left two screens and take the Secret Passage.
- Get the Magic Key - From the beginning of Level Eight, go
up six screens, right one, then take the Secret Passage.
- Find the Boss - To find the Boss Gleeock, start at the beginning
of Level Eight and go up four screens, right one, through the
Secret Passage, then up one more screen.
- Defeat Gleeock - Stand just behind its heads (on top of its
body) and swing your Sword as fast as you can. When one of the
heads is cut off it will fly around the room. Try to avoid these,
while continuing to attack the attached ones.
- Next Step: Complete Level Nine
- Find Level Nine - From Start, go right one screen, up five,
left one, up one, cross the river, up one, and left two. Bomb
the bottom of the left rock to find the entrance.
- Get the Red Ring - From the beginning of Level Nine, go up
two rooms, left one, then take the Secret Passage. Next, go
right two, down one, right one (bomb the right wall), up two
and take the Secret Passage.
- Get the Silver Arrows - From the beginning of Level Nine,
go up two screens, left one, through the Secret Passage, then
right two, up one, left one (bomb the wall), through another
Secret Passage, left two, through yet another Secret passage,
then up one (bomb the wall), and through the last Secret Passage.
- Find the Boss - To find the Boss Ganon, start at the beginning
of Level Nine then go up two screens, left one, through the
Secret Passage, right two, up one, left one, through another
Secret Passage, left two, up three, left one, through yet another
Secret Passage, left one, through the last Secret Passage, and
up one more screen.
- Defeat Ganon
- Defeat Ganon- As soon as Ganon begins his attack, he vanishes.
Start swinging your sword in the area where you think he is
hidden. If you hit him, his magic spell will be broken temporarily,
and he will be visible for a few seconds. At this point he is
still too strong to be defeated.
- After he turns invisible again, try to hit him again with
the Sword. Wait for him to become invisible and hit him one
more time. This time when he becomes visible, he should be brown.
At this point, he is weakened enough to be destroyed with the
Silver Arrow. Shoot him with the Silver Arrow, and watch him
turn to dust!
- Find Princess Zelda - After defeating Ganon, pick up his Triforce
and head for the next room. At last, you have found Princess Zelda
There is a problem, however, because Zelda is surrounded by flames!
Strike the flames with your Sword to reach the Princess.
- When you are reunited with Zelda, you will both hold up your Triforces
in triumph as the credits roll by. After the credits you will be
given the opportunity to begin the Second Quest.
Second
Quest
- Get the Wooden Sword
- The Wooden Sword can be found inside the door on the screen
where the game begins. Simply walk on top of the sword to pick
it up.
- Purchase the Blue Ring
- From Start (where Link begins the game), go right four screens,
up five, right two, up one and right two. Push on the top wall
of this screen to find the shop that sells Bait and the Blue
Ring.
- Next Step: Level One
- Find Level One - From Start, go right one screen, up four
and left one.
- Get the Wooden Boomerang - From the beginning of Level One,
go right one screen and destroy all enemies in the room to make
the Wooden Boomerang appear.
- Find the Boss - To find the boss Aquamentus, start at the
beginning of Level One then go up one screen, right one, through
the Secret Passage, left one and up one.
- Defeat Aquamentus - Aquamentus be easily defeated with the
Bow and Arrow, but the Sword or Bombs are very effective also.
When attacking you should aim for its horn.
- Get the Power Bracelet
- From Start, go up one screen, left five, up one, left one
and down one. This will put you in the Lost Woods. To get out,
go up one, left one, down one and left one. You will emerge
below the graveyard. Now go up three, right three, up the right
ladder and right one more screen. Touch the top right Armos
Statue to reveal the Power Bracelet.
- Get the First Extra Heart Container
- Push a gravestone (you need the Power Bracelet) in the upper_left
screen of the graveyard to reveal a staircase which leads to
the Heart Container.
- Get the Letter to Old Woman
- From Start, go up one screen, left four screens, up one screen,
left two screens (use top path), and down one screen. You'll
now be in the Lost Woods. To get out of the Lost Woods, go up
one screen, left one screen, down one screen, and left one screen.
Next, go up three screens, right three screens, up one screen
(use the right path), right one screen, up one screen, left
two screens, up one screen, left one screen, down one screen,
and use the Power Bracelet to lift the rocks. Take the stairs
and speak to the old man to get the Letter.
- Get the Medicine
- Once you have the Letter to the Old Lady, you can buy the
Medicine at shops scattered throughout the overworld. One such
shop can be found one screen right of where Link starts the
game. To enter, use the Candle to burn the bottom-left tree.
- Get the White Sword
- From Start, go right one screen, up five, left one, up one,
right three, up one, and enter the door. Simply step on the
Sword to pick it up.
- Next Step: Level Two
- Find Level Two - From Start, go up one screen, left three,
up three, and touch the Statues to find a stairway.
- Get the Whistle - From the beginning of Level Two, go up six
screens, right one, down one and walk through the bottom wall
by pushing against the center of the wall. In the next room,
go down the stairs to find the Whistle.
- Find the Boss - To find the Boss Gleeock, start at the beginning
of Level Two then go up three screens, right two, down three,
through the Secret Passage, and up one.
- Defeat Gleeock - Stand just behind its heads (on top of its
body) and swing your Sword as fast as you can. When one of the
heads is cut off it will fly around the room. Try to avoid these,
while continuing to attack the attached heads.
- Get the Second and Third Extra Heart Containers
- Heart Container One - Go to the screen where Level Nine was
located in the First Quest (one screen right of Spectacle Rock).
Blow the Whistle to reveal a Hidden Staircase.
- Heart Container Two - Use the Whistle in the lower-left screen
of the Desert to open a Hidden Staircase.
- Purchase Bait
- From Start, go right one screen, up five, right five, up one,
then right two. Push on the top wall of this screen to find
the shop that sells the Blue Ring and Bait for 60 Rupees.
- Next Step: Level Three
- Find Level Three - From Start, go right four screens, up two,
right two, up one, left one, up one, then use the Whistle to
reveal the entrance. This is where Level Two was located in
the First Quest.
- Get the Magic Boomerang - From the beginning of Level Three,
go up six screens and destroy all of the enemies in the room
to make the Magic Boomerang appear.
- Find the Boss - To find the Boss Dodongo, start at the beginning
of Level Three then go up one screen, and right one screen.
- Defeat Dodongo - You must feed him two Bombs to destroy him.
To do this, let Dodongo walk toward you, and face him. Just
before he bumps into you, lay a Bomb. The Bomb should go right
into his mouth. He will stop and swell up when the Bomb explodes.
- Find and defeat Goriya
- From the beginning of Level Three, go up one screen, right
one, down one and through the Secret Passage. The blue Goriya
are pretty strong, so try to freeze them with your Boomerang,
then attack quickly with the Sword.
- Purchase the Blue Candle
- From Start, go up one screen, left one screen, then enter
the shop.
- Next Step: Level Four
- Find Level Four - From Start, go right one screen, up five,
left one, up one and right four. This puts you in the Lost Hills.
Push a stone on this screen to reveal the entrance to Level
Four.
- Get the Magic Book - From the beginning of Level Four, go
up one screen, left one, up one, right two and take the Secret
Passage.
- Find the Boss - To find the Boss Digdogger, start at the beginning
of Level Four then go up one screen, left one, up six, right
two, through the Secret Passage, and up one more screen.
- Defeat Digdogger - Blow the Whistle, then strike Digdogger
when it shrivels up. Occasionally, Digdogger will split into
two or three smaller Digdoggers when you blow the Whistle. When
this happens, just destroy one of them, leave the room, and
immediately re_enter. The other two small Digdoggers will be
gone.
- Get the Raft
- From the beginning of Level Four, go up one screen, left one,
up six, right two, through the Secret Passage, up two, through
the top wall of the Triforce room, and up three more rooms.
The Secret Passage to the Raft is in this room.
- Get the Fourth Extra Heart Container
- Use the raft on the Eastern Seacoast, in the same place that
you found a Heart Container in the First Quest.
- Purchase the Arrows
- The Arrows can be purchased from several merchants in the
overworld.
- Next Step: Level Five
- Find Level Five - From Start, go up one screen, left two,
up one, step onto the pier and use the Raft to find the entrance.
This is the same place where Level Four was found in the First
Quest.
- Get the Bow - From the beginning of Level Five, go up one
screen, left one, down one, through the Secret Passage, then
right one and down one.
- Find the Boss - To find the Boss Gleeock, start at the beginning
of Level Five then go up one screen, left two, up two, right
one, up one, right one, up one, through the Secret Passage,
then left one.
- Defeat Gleeock - Stand just behind its heads (on top of its
body) and swing your Sword as fast as you can. When one of the
heads is cut off it will fly around the room. Try to avoid these,
while continuing to attack the attached heads.
- Next Step: Level Six
- Find Level Six - From Start, go right two then push a stone
to open the "Choose any Road" screen. Use the middle
staircase, then go down one screen, left three and use the Whistle
to open the entrance to Level Six.
- Get the Ladder - From the beginning of Level Six, go up two
screens, left three (using a Key) and take the Secret Passage.
- Find the Boss - To find the Boss Gohma, start at the beginning
of Level Six then go up five screens, through the Secret Passage,
right two, through another Secret Passage, and up one more screen.
- Defeat Gohma - You must wait for him to open up his eye, then
shoot it with the Bow and Arrow. Red Gohmas take only one hit,
while the blue variety requires three.
- Get the Fifth Extra Heart Container
- Use the ladder on the Eastern Seacoast, in the same place
that you found a heart in the First Quest.
- Get the Magic Sword
- From Start, go up one screen, left five, up one, left one
and down one. This will put you in the Lost Woods. To get out,
go up one, left one, down one then left one. This will bring
you out below the graveyard. From there, go up three screens,
right three, up the right ladder, right one, up one, right three,
up one and right two. You will be on a screen with a formation
of rocks shaped like an arrow. Push on the rocks to reveal a
Hidden Stairway.
- Next Step: Level Seven
- Find Level Seven - From Start, go right four screens, up two,
right one using the top path, then down one. Walk to the left
until you are standing to the right of the two bushes. Face
left and use the Candle on the second tree to the left. Once
the entrance is exposed, walk up one screen, left one, down
one, then right one to enter Level Seven.
- Get the Red Candle - From the beginning of Level Seven, go
right three screens, take the Secret Passage, then go down one
and take another Secret Passage to find the Candle.
- Find the Boss - To find the Boss Gleeock, start at the beginning
of Level Seven then go right five screens, up five, through
the Secret Passage, up one, right one, down one, through the
Secret Passage, and left two more screens.
- Defeat Gleeock - Stand just behind its heads (on top of its
body) and swing your Sword as fast as you can. When one of the
heads is cut off it will fly around the room. Try to avoid these,
while continuing to attack the attached heads.
- Purchase More Bait
- From Start, go right one screen, up five, right five, up one,
then right two. Push on the top wall of this screen to find
the shop that sells Bait for 60 Rupees.
- Next Step: Level Eight
- Find Level Eight - From Start, go right one screen, up five,
left one, up one, then right two. Stand below the river, and
place a bomb on the fifth brick from the left at the top of
the screen (you'll need to use the Ladder to cross over the
river in order to place the Bomb). You should be one screen
left of the waterfall.
- Get the Magic Key - From the beginning of Level Eight, go
up seven screens, left five, take the Secret Passage and then
go left one.
- Get the Magic Wand - From the beginning of Level Eight, go
up one screen, through the Secret Passage, down two and through
another Secret Passage.
- Find the Boss - To find the Boss Dodongo, start at the beginning
of Level Eight then go up seven screens, left five, through
the Secret Passage, down one, left one, down one, right two
through another Secret Passage, and up one more screen.
- Defeat Dodongo - You must feed him two Bombs to destroy him.

of Level Nine then go up one screen, left three, up two, left
one, right one, up one, right one, up one, right one, up one,
left two, up one, through the Secret Passage, and right two
more screens.
- Defeat Ganon

informed that you have reached the end of Legend of Zelda.
- Note About Secret Passages
- To open secret passages, you must first destroy all the enemies
in any given room. After all enemies are destroyed, push any
stones that are present. If there is a passage in this room,
it will open.
F.A.Q:
Q: I found the Sword, but the old man won't give it to me. Why?
A: You need more Heart Containers. You must have five Heart Containers
for the White Sword, and 12 Heart Containers for the Magic sword.
Q: My Sword disappeared! Now what should I do?
A: Touch one of the Blue Bubbles, drink some Medicine, or visit one
of the Fairy Ponds to regain your Sword.
Q: What new skills does Link acquire in the Second Quest?
A: After completing Level One, he can walk through certain dungeon
walls.
Q: I received a clue about people who live in the walls. What does
it mean?
A: If you indiscriminately bomb walls, you may find hidden rooms that
are occupied with a villager from Hyrule. By doing so, you will be
charged a few Rupees for damaging the home.
Q: Can you finish the game without ever picking up the sword?
A: No.
Q: What does the number after my name mean?
A: This is the number of lives you have lost during the game.
