About The Ouachita Mountains:
Pronounced "wah-shi-tah" this range is located in southwestern Arkansas
and southeastern Oklahoma.
The Ouachita
Mountains contain the Ouachita National Forest and Hot Springs National
Park as well as numerous state parks and scenic byways. The mountains are covered
in broad-leafed temperate forests that include rivers, valleys,
and many beautiful hollows, caves,
grottos, creeks, and cliffs. They are mostly plateau-like fold mountains that
are part of the U.S. Interior Highlands, which also includes the
Ozarks; sometimes the regions are refereed to collectively. Both ranges
are unusual because they run east to west, unlike the Rockies and Appalachians,
which run north to south. They are as old as the Appalachian Mountains and their
highest point, which is also the higest elevation in the State of Arkansas,
is Mount Magazine;
2,753 feet above sea-level.
